I am often asked, “how much does a website cost?” And it’s a bit like asking how long’s a piece of string. We’ll need to ask you several questions before giving you a quotation. Questions like: Have you got a logo or branding? How many pages do you want on your site? Have you got any images? How many images and words would you like on each page? The number of products (if e-commerce)? Who is your target audience? Do you need specific functionality? Etc, etc. Hopefully, the three packages (detailed below) will give you a better idea of the costs.

Are you getting value for money?

I know of customers who have paid 5K for a low quality, simple, 5 page site that I would have expected they paid a few hundred for. Conversely I have known others that paid a few hundred for a large website and feel they got a great deal, but it has no SEO optimisation, or the theme and plugins are unlicensed,  out of date, the site is broken or has picked up a virus. Whatever the spend, it may not seem such good value.

Whatever the cost, the important thing is value for money. So if you have paid for a really big snazzy website, but it is not on Google and stands no chance of ranking on Google (because it has not been built well with your keywords in mind ie  onsite SEO), then it may need building again from scratch. The phrase “buy cheap, buy twice” springs to mind.

Yes, the DIY website builders are designed to make it easy.

You have probably seen the adverts to build your own site with  WIX,  GoDaddy, IONOS and many others, who make it sound so easy you feel confident to give it a go. How difficult can it be to put some text and images together? When clients come to us having tried to do it themselves, we know they really appreciate the time and skill it takes to get things right and looking just how they want them. Clients have told me about screaming at the computer and having tears trying to do it themselves because….

  • they couldn’t work out what to do
  • the layouts were fixed
  • they got confused by all the jargon .

Often they have spent days attempting to build their site and when they are not happy with it, it is a shame that it wasn’t time spent doing their usual work.

If you want to get involved, why not let us take the frustration and anxiety away by building you a website you love and then teaching you how to edit pages, posts and menus etc and support you thereafter.

People seem to want to scrimp on the cost of a site, but will then often spend a fortune on Google Ads for short term visibility and get little return. I have also known clients spend £1000pm+ on Google Ads, got lots of hits, but did not get any new business from it.

Sometimes this is because they built the website themselves and didn’t do the best job, other times it is that the Ad is not well targeted at their audience (e.g. Plumbers in Swindon won’t want to target leaky taps thought the UK! If they are looking for local business then it needs to target local areas). So even though they may have visitors land on their pages, either they are not a good fit for the search or the website put them off because of how it looks, or feels (is it trustworthy?).

What are website conversions?

Conversions are when someone carries out an action that you intended, e.g. booking an appointment, filling in your contact form, downloading your brochure etc. Your site should be leading the visitors towards these goals. If you are switched on about branding and marketing you may well know that there are certain things that can increase conversions. Call to action sections,  buttons… etc.

Adding Keywords (Keyword phrases)

Your keywords will be in your meta tags, you might know that there are other places these words need to go, and to use variations of these words, and you might know…  not to over do it and use too many… because Google might think you are ‘Keyword stuffing”, which is what everyone did some years ago until Google got wise to it.  When we build sites, we spend time ‘crafting’ it in to a site that will be found in search engines. This website crafting can take quite some hours and experience. With 20+ years under our belt, we know a thing or two about this. Feel free to get in touch and have a chat about how we can help you or support you, whatever your situation.
